Anything is possible

When was the last time you set yourself a challenge?

Did you achieve it?

Well I set myself a crazy challenge last month, I had no idea if I would succeed but I wasn’t afraid to fail. I just had to try and see if I could do it, even though everyone thought I was crazy (including myself). What the worst that could happen, it wouldn’t work, oh well that’s not the end of the world, is it?

My car broke down, it overheated on the motorway and I had to get towed home (getting towed is a very common occurance for me), I had topped up the water before leaving the home and wasn’t aware of any problems, just being cautious as it was a beautiful hot day.

I had a lovely day out and I was almost home, only one motorway junction away and I lose all power. I wait for my roadside recovery to come and rescue me, when he arrives he  showed me that my radiator had completely gone it was pulsing out water and crumbling to touch. So he obversely tells me I need a need radiator, but that wasn’t the worst news! Depending on how long I had been driving with it the engine so hot I might have buggered the whole engine or head gasket, he then goes on to tell me that the only way be able to find out what damage if any has been caused by first replacing radiator. How much was this going to cost me? And if I paid to have a new radiator fitted to then find out the engine was done for, I have to pay a mechanic for a broken car and then probably look for another car.

Calmly the next day I looked for a new radiator online just to get an idea on price, only £40 for a new one, bargain I thought no point in looking for a second hand one when new is that cheap. I then wondered how hard is it to change a car radiator, just to try and get a rough idea of how much a mechanic might charge me. The wonders of youtube, I found  so many videos showing you how to do it, it looked quite simple. I even found a this video of a man replacing one in 10 minutes. This got me thinking, if someone can change it in 10 minutes I bet I could do it in a 4-5 hours. It just a few bolts, clips and hoses, just looks like flat pack furniture, I love making flat pack furniture.

So now I had decided I was going to give it ago, even though everyone thought I was stupid and that I would fail, I didn’t care because lets face it the engine might of already been buggered so its not like I could cause much more damage, right? With all my previous car experience including topping up water levels and putting air in my tyres, what else did I need?

New Radiator

Well I borrow some tools from family members and neighbours (as I have none) and got to work, with lots of strange looks coming my way, but oh well.  I was determined and I wasn’t gonna let my car beat me and I wanted to prove to everyone that I could do it, but most all prove to myself I could.

Well you might have guess it, I did it!!! When I’d put my car back together I was scared to turn the key unsure if I had broken my broken car even more. But oh my god when I turned the key in the ignition and the engine started it was the best feeling in the world, a huge mixture of shock, disbelief, joy, excitement, with an enormous sense of pride and achievement. I felt on top of the world, like I could do anything I set my mind to.

Garlic and Chocolate???

I love chocolate and I love garlic, I’m sure I eat enough garlic for it to count as one of my 5 a day. Garlic would definitely be one of my desert island items. Speaking of desert/desserts (dyslexic joke), I thought would  garlic and chocolate work together, you can buy chilli and chocolate and sea salt and chocolate so why not garlic?

I googled chocolate and garlic recipes, and I am definitely not the first person to think of it. Lots of recipes and opinions. None of these recipes had many reviews/comments from people who have testing them out. So as usual I decided to make up my own, I generally only used recipes as inspiration and always play around and change things. Most of the recipes I found used raw garlic and I thought this would be a bit too harsh, so opted to trying it with roasted garlic (one of the best ways to eat garlic I think).  So I made up a few small batches of chocolate ganache testing the strength of the garlic flavour. I instantly love it but knew it wouldn’t be to everyones taste. Its a love love it or hate it chocolate!  I rolled half of the ganache balls in cocoa and dipped the others in dark chocolate.

While I had the chocolate out I decide to make a some chocolate decorations as its been awhile. I baked some chocolate and courgette mini cakes, I did follow the recipe this one, but I wasn’t sure on the texture as they were a bit too firm for me I think. Next I will make these with my normal chocolate cake recipe. Really enjoyed making these and playing with chocolate again, I love it when it turns out better than you expected.
